On December 18 last year we were thrilled to finally be able to announce the launch of the Surge Sanctuary, the culmination of a dream of ours since we started Surge and one which took a big leap closer to reality with the opening of Unity Diner in 2018.

It was a wonderful way to end 2020 on a high, a year characterised by so many lows. Of course, it can’t make up for the many tragedies and hardships faced by so many last year, but a little good news couldn’t have hurt.

Since opening, we’ve had a huge showing of support, with many offers of help from people willing to give up their precious time and skills to volunteer for the sanctuary. From plumbers to PhD students, and carpenters to reiki healers, we’ve had so many amazing offers. We’re busy going through and replying to as many as we can deal with, so please bear with us.

As for the real stars of the show - our non-human residents - there have been newcomers since launch. We’ve welcomed four new turkeys - Lisa, Rosé, Jennie and Jisoo - who were destined for dinner tables this Christmas just past if they hadn’t found their way to us. You can read more about their story on our Instagram.

We’re also gearing up to take in more animals, sorting the fencing and hedgerows - we’ll be able to give you more information on that in the coming weeks, so please do follow us on Instagram, Facebook and of course subscribe to our monthly newsletter.
